ABOUT JONATHAN

Starting his career as a potter, Jonathan opened his first store in Soho, New York, in 1998. Figuring “why stop at pots,” he launched throw pillows and then started imagining the sofas those pillows could sit on. Soon enough he was in the home décor biz, working with artisans of all kinds to craft everything from swanky side tables to divine dinnerware to custom upholstery. If you’re not familiar with his designs, do browse his website in the or the .

Polished, eccentric and unexpected, Jonathan describes his aesthetic as ‘Modern American Glamour’, a look which he achieves by creating a foundation of timelessly chic furniture and accessorizing with abandon. Jonathan’s favorite motto, “If your heirs won’t fight over it, we won’t make it”, reflects his continued commitment to impeccable craftsmanship and irreverent luxury. But his love of pottery remains at his core: his office in New York sits between a giant kiln and a working pottery studio. Ultimately, Jonathan believes that your home should make you happy – and I couldn’t agree more!

DID YOU KNOW?

Several years ago when I was making my first book, Decorate, I spent a day styling his home in New York City alongside my team and photographer Debi Treloar. I will never forget the experience of working in his gorgeous, colorful home which is filled with so many things he designed. I walked away from that experience forever changed; which is why his home story in my first book is one of the most meaningful shoots I've ever been on.

Now, so many years later, I am overjoyed to welcome Jonathan Adler to Germany officially. I am also so proud because I've been writing about him on cattledogs since I started this site nearly 12 years ago, so you can be sure that to finally get to meet him for the first time next month is, for me, a great honor and I'm happy to extend the invitation to all of you if you're able to be in Berlin on January 17th. It will be a special chance for you to meet Jonathan (one in a million, really!) and I know that you will walk away inspired and happy since I've heard that he's a delightful man to spend time with.

If your heirs won’t fight over it, we won’t make it.

10 Interiors + Lifestyle Things I Love For December

Ready for a little holiday shopping with me today? Hi there, it's Allan and can you believe that it is the last month of the year? Are you excited for the holidays? I know I am because I will be celebrating Christmas with my entire family, which hasn't happened since I was 8 or 9.

I love this season because spending time finding the perfect gift for everyone and to just take my time with shopping makes me happy. I hate stressing, so if I don’t find everything on my list, I don’t sweat it. I’ll try it again next year. I am currently in Los Angeles, until mid-month, then I'll take a quick trip to Mexico before heading back to Copenhagen. It’s nice to get a few drops of the sun in before the long months of darkness.

I really hope that you enjoyed last months' "10 Favorites" list. I've received a bunch of very nice comments, so please keep it up – and feel free to recommend your favorites, maybe you know of brands and products that I don’t. This month, I have once again collected some of my favorites. Really pay attention to the art section, as these iconic photos are perfect for the wish list this year.

I also want to highlight the grooming sections, which are so much fun, I really am testing every product too, only the best for you guys!

1 // FURNITURE:

If you follow me on Instagram, you would have noticed I just purchased the bench designed in 1946. The ash seat has been on the top of my wish list for years, and just a few weeks ago it was finally delivered. I use it as a coffee table, as the width is just perfect in my narrow living room. It comes in two different lengths and the clean linear aesthetic lines make it perfect if you want a simple look in your home.

2 // ART:

I just love the old Hollywood glamour and I am such big fan of those great actors. Some of my favorites are Paul Newman, James Dean, Harrison Ford, Sean Connery and Roger Moore. has made it their sole mission to make iconic photographs available in super high quality perfect for any gallery wall. They are not only able to deliver magnificent photos of great actors, but also some of the most historic moments in sports and unique moments of some of the greatest musicians of our time. Check out among hundreds of photos in the Sonic Edition collection.

 3 // DECORATE:

It is the season of lamps though finding the right one(s) is never easy. One thing is certain, you can (almost) never have too many, and most importantly choose lamps that give a warm, soft light. There is nothing worse than a harsh bright glare. For perfect ambiance, you need lamps in every corner, and you certainly do not have to go big, but a small lamp is perfect for a subtle cozy feeling on rainy, dark winter nights. I really recommend the new small, ripped table lamp , which is just so perfect in any corner of your home.

4 // SLEEP:

Just a short train ride from Copenhagen you can check-in to the perfect spa hotel, . A former hospital now transformed into a beautiful spa retreat with a massive spa and sauna area, state of the art fitness facilities, multiple restaurants and amazing rooms. The junior suites have just been updated with new interior – and the views from the balconies are the best overlooking the Baltic Sea.

5 // LISTEN:

What can I say; it’s the holiday season. Just be happy I didn’t choose Jingle bells, jingle bells. Get out your Christmas cards, the stereo and start writing those cards to all your loved ones. It's Mariah Carey, All I want for Christmas is you! Classic.

By the way, what's your favorite Christmas song?

6 // GROOM:

I am over the moon. We finally got our very own store in Copenhagen. I quickly dropped by to snatch some of their new men’s grooming collection, including great beard oil and face bronzer, which is just perfect to get you a little bit of a sun-kissed face.

I came across all natural unisex skincare brand, , which claims to be perfect for skin that faces the city, so I snatched up their city set #2, which includes a face mist that works perfectly for a quick fix up when on the go. I also enjoy the energizing face cream; it seems to really boost and revitalize your skin.

Finally, I have been washing my hair with products by Australian brand . Honestly, I don’t really wash my hair too often, so when I do, I do like nice products and the Stimulate-Me wash really spoke to me. And while I won't admit it just yet, I am getting older, which you can see on my fast retrieving hairline, so I had to try the thick.again spray. So far all I can say is that I really like the scent, does it work? I don’t know yet, but keep following me on IG and you might see me rocking a full-on mullet next year.

 7 // READ:

has a new book out, a companion to their new website. This compact tome shows how to accomplish an unencumbered life in a home that makes us happy, with more than 100 simple and stylish tips, each clearly presented and accompanied by full-color photographs that are sure to inspire. A really nice book for the coffee table and a great source for updating your home in 2018.

8 // EAT:

One of the most iconic restaurants in Venice, LA, and one of my all-time favorites is . They recently did a major makeover making the outside restaurant even more perfect. The 5-course tasting menu is amazing and lets you taste more or less everything on the menu, and a few you won't find on the menu. Skip the butcher’s board, but do order the ravioli with braised pork. It is to die for.

shop.jpg

9 // SHOP:

As you are probably all shopped out after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and slowly regaining your strength for the Christmas shopping, I’ll make it easy for you this month. If you are in Europe, check out one of my favorite online shops for great design,  Rosborg. is just a great site to source those presents – and if you are in the US, you have to check out , which is ultra-curated designer furnishings and decor that are simply chic.

10 // SMELL:

Scented candles are everywhere. The trick is to choose the ones that don’t smell too much unlit, as the oils will really send out the scents when heating up. A new one on my radar is founder , who has started a new brand in her own name. I love the style and scent of the candle in the reusable ceramic cup by Gustavberg. Just perfect as a treat to yourself or perfect on your Christmas wish list.

Happy holidays and I will see you next year. -

Christmas & Holiday Decorations For Parties That You'll Love

Are you looking for some non-traditional decorating inspiration for the holidays? Hi everyone, this is Anke with some festive tabletop ideas for you for the month of December because now is the time to think about decoration. "Well that happened fast", is basically what I think this time of the year, you too? Suddenly, the year is coming to a close and the spirit of Christmas season is upon us. And how could it NOT be with so much Christmas activity and inspiration on blogs, Instagram, Pinterest and in the magazines?

I have already tried out many crafting projects in the past; the "Fröbelstern“ (Advent star), to give an example, is definitely a DIY goal of mine. I love these stars () but did not manage to fold it in a neat way so far so I can't show it on here to all of you... Maybe this is one reason why I opted for a paper star decoration that is easy to make and won't frustrate you. I also like the stars I've made because they stand out with a strong look, particularly when you choose black paper!

fantas-tisch-december-17-15.jpg

To make the stars, simply pick any star template you like (you will find countless ones on the internet) and cut out stars in two or three different sizes. I sewed several stars one by one with my sewing machine and hung the garland above the table.

fantas-tisch-december-17-17.jpg

I attached others to glass bottles with the same black yarn. When using bottles or glasses for tall candles make sure you use wax dots to fix them properly!

fantas-tisch-december-17-8.jpg

On my December table, you see black plates and cutlery, napkins and some small details like a vase and candleholder in a color calls "Dusty Cedar“, which I would describe as a mix of terracotta and dusky pink. This one is clearly my current color crush! What is yours?

fantas-tisch-december-17-14.jpg

It also made me happy to decorate with Eucalyptus again. And if you have a look around you will notice Eucalyptus is still the darling of stylists at this time of the year! I fixed several branches loosely onto my table clamp (you will find more information about this gorgeous tool here).

fantas-tisch-december-17-9.jpg

I also made six tiny and simple wreaths to circle the bowls for salt (the kind of salt you see is black fjord salt) and combined a few twigs with , and a velvety flower/ branch named .

What else? Just this... Thank you very much for stopping by today to read my column! I wish you a wonderful Holiday season just the way you like it best, contemplative and calm or sparkling and cheerful or a little bit of both! Have a beautiful month of December and see you again safe and sound in 2018! Love,

6 DIY Scandinavian Style Holiday Napkin Ideas

Would you like to learn how to make lovely stamped napkins for your holiday table this season? Well first, hi everyone and a very Happy Friday to you! Today is the 1 Advent and whether you celebrate the holidays or not, no doubt you will entertain this month in some way.

scandi_DIYreshot.jpg

These patterns are very holiday-neutral I guess you can say, yet if you tie them up with pine or something Christmas-y, they instantly look very much in the Christmas spirit. I love these napkins because Leslie made them for our book, , and they can be used for all types of parties, year round.

Imagine stamping them in different colors for a playful birthday party, in pastels for a kids' party, or in white against deep blue linens for a more boho look? The great thing about crafting and making by hand is that the sky is the limit - your creativity can take you where you'd like to go.

Putting together a party can be overwhelming, especially when you have no idea where to start. Decorate for a Party breaks it down both logistically and visually and helps you decipher your party style. Whether planning a big bash or an intimate gathering, it’s an essential to have on hand for all your upcoming festivities.
— Joy Cho, OH JOY!

Here are a few simple instructions on how to make each napkin that you see above. This DIY can be found directly in our book in the holiday craft party section, complete with our playlist of songs to put you in a mood that is merry and bright!

White Napkins 6 Ways:

ROW ONE (left to right)

1. SINGLE TRIANGLES - We used sticky-backed foam sheets from the craft store for our stamps. Simply cut out your desired shape, then peel back the covering and stick it to another piece of foam that is slightly larger than your stamp shape. We started with a triangle in a random pattern. (Note: You can also stick the foam to wooden blocks or use a potato to cut your shape, but we found the foam worked best for this project.)

2. SQUARES - This is a quick design to execute. Use a small square cut from the foam sheet and repeat.

3. STARS - A soft matte fabric paint is used to create these designs as the paint washes nicely and has a softer feel. Be careful not to use the harder dimensional fabric paints. A star is cut from the foam and repeated. We used a square-edged paintbrush to touch up in a few places.

ROW TWO (left to right)

4. BARS - Create this fun linear design by placing four foam strips together on one stamp.

5. SPOTS - For this design, we’ve used a round sponge stamp from the craft store.

6. DOUBLE TRIANGLES - We created two stamps and each had two different triangle foam shapes. Don’t be afraid to touch up your design with a small square-edged paintbrush to sharpen some of the edges of the design when necessary.

NOTE: For some of these patterns, you can make them more holiday-themed by altering the designs just a little bit. For instance, the triangles could be stacked to look like Christmas trees by stacking 3 on top of each other from example 1. The spots, example 5, could be stacked in threes to form a snowman. You can also mix and match prints. The bars and spots together could be created to read Ho Ho Ho.
